The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Real Safety campaign for tamper-resistant receptacles received Honorable Mention in the Public Relations Campaign category at the 2008 Business Marketing Association ACE Awards, held June 17 in New York City.
The campaign combined public relations, video and online marketing to raise awareness of the 2008 National Electrical CodeĀ® (NEC) requirement for Tamper-Resistant Receptacles to be installed in new homes, and to advocate Code adoption, state by state.
A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle has a built-in shutter system that prevents children from inserting metal objects into the slots. The shutters obstruct objects from touching electrically live components, but plugs can be inserted and removed as usual. These devices provide the most reliable protection against child electrical injuries. The Code change aims to reduce the thousands of incidents involving receptacles reported each year.
P&S is an active member of the NEMA task force responsible for the Tamper-Resistant Code development and campaign efforts. Jim Osterbrock, vice president of engineering at P&S, is the NEMA tamper-resistant Code task force chairman.
The NEMA wiring device committee, with representatives from four major electrical manufacturers, assembled the campaign task force, and Jack Wells, vice president-corporate development at P&S, is the NEMA wiring device task force chairman.
The ACE awards have honored the best in business-to-business creative work for more than 25 years. While the New York City BMA chapter hosts the event, the competition drew 436 entries from across the United States and as far away as Australia.
